November 2, 2004
The symposium (with international participation) was held in Tivat, Republic of Montenegro, 14 – 18 October, 2004. It was organized by University of Montenegro, The Republic Institution for the Protection of Nature, and Natural History Museum of Montenegro.
The Symposium provided the opportunity to demonstrate ecological achievements in Montenegro and other countries as well as the exchange of experience and knowledge.
The Symposium presented knowledge of modern basic ecology and environmental sciences accumulated recently. The papers on the Symposium were presented in different thematic sections:
Each section started by the presention of case studies chosen among the proposed papers by the scientific committee. Apart from this, plenary sessions prepared by the eminent ecologists from Montenegro and other countries presented the achievements of modern ecology.
Our work “Biological damage to cultural monuments in the Republic of Macedonia” by M. Karadelev and I. Irbe, was presented in the section Conservation of biodiversity and geodiversity. We received much interest from the participants, because inspections of cultural monuments for biodamage are urgently needed not only in Macedonia but also in other Balkan countries, which are very rich in old cultural heritage. It was a good opportunity to draw attention to the dangerous role of fungal and insect damages, and the importance of finding means to protect these art treasures.
The abstract of our study can be found in the Symposium Abstract Book (page 80). The full text is submitted and accepted for publication in the journal “Mycologia Montenegrina”. The support of the Studienstiftung Mykologie to travel expenses is acknowledged.
