Algal Layer - LIAS Glossary

algal layer (noun, pl. algal layers) – distinct, horizontal aggregation of algae lying just below the upper cortex or close to the surface of lichens that have no cortex; generally developed between thin-walled and loosely interwoven hyphae. Note: The term algal layer is generally more widely established in the literature and should be regarded as a synonym of photobiont layer, provided that the term algae is used in a broad sense to include not only eukaryotic but also blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
