apical cushion (noun, ascus term, pl. apical cushions) – the inner, non-amyloid part within an otherwise amyloid tholus, especially if broadened (e. g., Lecidea-type ascus), otherwise sometimes called central cone (e. g., Bacidia-type ascus). This is: part of ascus.
