ascocarp margin (
noun,
pl. margins;
ascocarp term) – a
morphological term referring to a rim formed around an
ascocarp; this
margin is either coloured and
textured like the
hymenium surface and
ontogenetically derived from hyphae that are part of the
apothecium (
proper margin,
true margin), or, it is (mostly) the same colour and
texture as the surrounding
thallus and thus developed from this surrounding thallus (
thalline margin). Internally the
anatomy of the margin usually corresponds with this external
morphology.
Related terms: proper margin,
thalline margin,
pseudothalline margin,
thalline collar,
thalline veil,
exciple,
lecanorine,
lecideine,
biatorine.
