ascogeneous (
adjective) – generative, reproductive,
ascus-forming; generally referring to generative hyphae of
ascomycetes, i. e.,
dicaryotic hyphae that are the result
plasmogamy. These ascogeneous hyphae typically consist of cells with two genetically different
nuclei (
heterokaryosis), or, more rarely, consist of cells with genetically identical nuclei (
homokaryosis). Ascogeneous hyphae are restricted to as narrow layer within the
ascocarp, whereas the majority of a
thallus or mycelium consists of
somatic,
uninucleate,
haploid hyphae. The
fusion of the two nuclei of the dikaryon is called
nucleogamy, generally rapidly followed by the formation of
meiospores within a sac-like structure, the
ascus.
