capitate (adjective) – cap-like, knob-like; swollen like a head or cap, or covered by a cap-like structure; literally: bearing a head (Latin: caput = head); i. e., referring to any knob-like structure that abruptly sits at the tip of a stipe or stalk; e. g., capitate soralia are soralia that form a cap at the end of branches or lobes; capitate paraphyses have swollen end-cells that sometimes have a thickened, and frequently pigmented cell wall covering the apical part of the cell.
