category (
noun,
pl. categories) – a class or set of things, people, concepts, etc. that share one or several features (qualities, characters, etc.), a division in a system of classification. Thus in biological classification the
taxa are categories of organisms, but also are the
taxonomic ranks (class, order, family or species) categories of the biological nomenclature. Furthermore, informal groups such as tree, shrub, herb, or
crustose,
foliose, and
fruticose categories. If these qualities are deemed characteristic or typical for that particular category, the term
type is often used instead of category;
see, e. g., spore types or
ascus types.
In this glossary several Categories have been defined to provide categorized access to the glossary terms.
