chroma (
noun,
no plural;
synonyms: colour intensity,
colour saturation) – the intensity or saturation of a colour; one of three main attributes of colour (
see hue,
chroma,
lightness). The more saturated colours are, the more intense they become. With decreasing saturation a particular hue becomes more and more grey. Two entirely de-saturated colours of identical hue and lightness can no longer be distinguished because they will be perceived as identical shades of grey. The term chroma as synonym for light intensity is somewhat misleading as it does not necessarily refer to a single hue of colour even though monochromatic light, i. e., the light of a single wavelength, is typically attributed to one hue of colour;
see hue,
lightness,
colour.
