This is a test version of the LIAS Glossary. Many definitions presented here are still in need of revision! Criticism as well as collaboration is welcome!
commensalism (noun, pl. commensalisms; ecology term) – a kind of symbiosis, without any apparent detriment for any of the partner, but an indirect benefit for one symbiont, the commensal. This commensal typically inhabits or lives on its host without a deteriorating, detrimental or damaging effect. The fact that the host provides a habitat for the commensal must be interpreted as a benefit, but the sheer presence of the commensal is not necessarily exploitative. Kind of: symbiosis type.
