This is a test version of the LIAS Glossary. Many definitions presented here are still in need of revision! Criticism as well as collaboration is welcome!
continuous (adjective) – more or less unbroken, not interrupted, (1) a cortex without pores or cracks; (2) a crustose thallus with an intact surface, lacking fissures, cracks or fractures, not subdivided. The term is sometimes erroneously applied to contiguous crustose thalli, i. e., thalli that are subdivided but entirely composed of closely adjoining areoles that all together share a common edge or boundary. (4) also loosely applied to any thallus that is not clearly subdivided into distinct subunits: a continuous or rimose crusts has no distinct subunits; a single-lobed umbilicate thallus is not subdivided; very few fruticose lichens like Thamnolia vermicularis are undivided or barely branched (vermiform). Related terms: adjoining, contiguous.
