crowded (adjective) – very dense, usually overlapping or overgrowing each other. As a result of overcrowding, growth distortions are common. Thus, areoles often become bullate because of growth pressure from closely adjoining ones. Densely crowded squamules typically become imbricate, i. e., they overlap. Entire thalli become contorted, apothecia developed wrinkled edges, thallus lobes swell and frequently grow on top of each other.
