description (noun, pl. descriptions; nomenclature term) – a detailed account of the essential characteristics of a new taxon; one of the minimum requirements for a valid name is the provision that a diagnosis or a description for the taxon (for the Botanical Code: written in the Latin language) is included in the publication of any new taxon name; generally a diagnosis is short and emphasizes distinct differences, a description is long and emphasizes the characteristics of a taxon.
