This is a test version of the LIAS Glossary. Many definitions presented here are still in need of revision! Criticism as well as collaboration is welcome!
fissure (noun, pl. fissures) – a distinct, but fine and narrow fracture in the thallus surface that otherwise has an intact cortex. Like cracks, fissures are irregular, but they are usually less wide, often not as deep, and never lined by a cortex (see rimose or rimose-areolate thalli). Related terms: crack. This is: part of thallus surface.
