gelatinous sheath (noun, ascospore term, spore morphology term, pl. gelatinous sheaths; synonyms: mucilaginous sheath, ectosporium) – the outermost layer of the ascospore; sometimes interpreted as an outer, gelatinous part of the perispore, sometimes interpreted as a separate layer, i. e., an epispore; most often thin and barely distinguished in the light microscope, but in some taxa considerably swollen and thus forming a halo.
