This is a test version of the LIAS Glossary. Many definitions presented here are still in need of revision! Criticism as well as collaboration is welcome!
magenta (adjective, colour term; synonym: violet-red, fuchsin-red) – a colour named after the town Magenta in north-western Italy. The colour magenta cannot be generated as monochromatic light because it is a result of the mixture of two wavelengths that lie at the opposing end of the visible spectrum: red light (with a wavelength around 650 nm) and violet light (with a wavelength around 400 nm). Magenta thus closes the colour wheel, a ring connecting the long-wave, red end with the short-wave violet end. Magenta (M) is one of three subtractive primary colours in the CMY colour model, using the capacity of ink to reflect light to mix different colours.
