Umbilicus

umbilicus (noun, pl. umbilici) – the sole holdfast of an umbilicate thallus, i. e., a solitary, usually short, thick, stem-like stalk more or less centrally located on the underside of an orbicular foliose (umbilicate) thallus of genera such as Umbilicaria, Dermatocarpon and Rhizoplaca; consisting of a single compact strand of fused hyphae, functioning for attachment to the (usually hard) substrate (mostly rock). This is: part of lower thallus surface.
