veil (noun, pl. veils; ascocarp term) – (1) in lecanorine apothecia referring to a thin layer of hyphae formed by the tectum and thalline hyphae; covering the disk of immature apothecia and rupturing irregularly with maturity, e. g., in some species of Pertusaria. (2) in lecideine apothecia referring to a residue of thallus material remaining attached to the margin, when the apothecium emerges; e. g., in some species of Buellia.
