This is only a very quick and dirty information page, sorry!

Area of expertise

Biologist with a long standing involvement in biodiversity informatics.

Master of science ("Diplom-Biologe") obtained from the University of Tübingen under the supervision of Prof. F. Oberwinkler with a thesis on the ecology and speciation in anthers smuts (1991). Since 1992 employed at the JKI (formerly the BBA), working on the identification and taxonomy of plant pathogenic fungi. Ph.D. (2007) at the University of Bayreuth under the supervision of Prof. G. Rambold with the thesis: "Structuring descriptive data of organisms - Requirement analysis and information models".

Expertise in botany, mycology, plant pathology, and management of culture collections. Research in phylogenetic systematics of fungal pathogens using DNA sequencing. Development of information systems and database applications since 1992, since 1995 eleven versions of the DELTA-compatible database application DiversityDescriptions (formerly "DeltaAccess") have been released. Participation in the CDEFD and BioCISE EU-Framework projects. Project leader of the IT-part of the German GLOPP project from 2000 to 2003, collaborator in the German GBIF Mycology node (2003-2006). Currently Workpackage Leader in the Key to Nature EU project (2007-2010, an eContentPlus programme).

Convener of the TDWG-SDD working group (Taxonomic Databases Working Group, "Structure of Descriptive Data" working group since 1999. The group works on the standardization of data for identification and biological descriptions and devises an xml-Internet standard for that purpose. TDWG is responsible for standardizing biodiversity data within the IUBS (International Union of Biological Sciences).

Former member of the Science Advisory Committee, "Electronical Catalogue of Names of Know Organisms (ECAT) Subcommittee" of GBIF International (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) since 2001-2004.
